QUICKDRAW COWGIRL
by Noah David Roberts
Am I pretty if I leave you alive, suffering in ur hovel, denouncing
the gxd that came before you? Some things are meant to be open
I'll claw at any image of violence to make it scream my name.
There's a lot of tearing when the tendon splits the spur. I said
you were no good & look where that got you, I pity ur ignorant shame
& at the same time this vengeful rainbow being
one of the many forces of nature is change so I must transition
with the mind that molds me I must create a body that is built
of rusted belts & moss must build a bridge of rotting rope &
I've got the quickest draw in the west says Billy the Kid who killed
nine men & died at 22 the forest is not so calm this time of year
there are beasts about the sky has razors for stars & thread /
am I pretty if I leave you alive, sweating ur ugly carcass thru caves
of weathered stone / no baby I don't want a kiss / I want to kick
straight boys' asses at pool / & steal their money
& if I'm ugly when ur dead at my feet in puddles & pools that
darken carpet shade, whether I had this violence before you or not,
whether I devoured before you or not, whether I wanted
revenge before you or not, & if I leave you pummeled with the
others, the enemies of my lovers, my brothers, sisters that you've
slain,
I heard even Billy was average with a gun, stumbling to load
leadweighted fingers / I too will not say grace before a meal
devouring at noon / I know you don't want to die before the
bronco breaks his back / for us / to ride into the sun //
