A real page-turner

A real page-turner

Dearest readers,

What's on your summer reading list? I just finished All Friends Are Necessary and am part way through Jonathan Abernathy You Are Kind. Taylor is currently finishing up Intermezzo and has The Emperor of Gladness on deck.

As an adolescent bookworm, I lived for summer's long stretches of uninterrupted reading time. When the latest installment of a certain boy wizard series arrived, I'd dive in head first, ignoring all bodily needs for as long as possible. Come bedtime, my trusty flashlight and I demolished the remaining pages. I was insatiable.

I wish I still read like that. A combination of dull college reading assignments and TikTok-induced brainrot precipitously shortened my attention span. I've had some luck in recent years with "immersion reading," but there's really nothing like a looming deadline to get me moving.

Enter, our new poetry reading group — official title TBA. This volunteer-powered group will guide participants through a diverse array of poems. In virtual gatherings (tentatively scheduled for the last Tuesdays of June, July, and August), attendees will break down the authors' style and strategies in a friendly, low-stakes environment. There's no cost to participate, and all are welcome to join. If you haven't already, fill out the interest form to join the waitlist.
One more way to tap into literary community: Pitch a Thursdays on the Stoop session! No experience required, but I do recommend watching this short presentation about what makes for a strong proposal. Local BIPOC writers are highly encouraged to pitch. Applications are rolling, but I'll be selecting the next batch of sessions later this week
In solidarity,

Julian Shendelman
Co-Director

Krystal Anali Vazquez is a writer and an attorney from Los Angeles living in Brooklyn. As part of her legal practice, she is a member of her firm’s team that defends the legality of the DACA program.
